Operations and Comp Survey Results: The Blocking-and-Tackling of Building a Coaching Business

May 11, 2022 | News

Along with providing high-quality golf instruction and coaching, our members are responsible for their business trajectory in many additional ways. Here is what you told us about your business-building duties and the tools that help you fulfill them:

Nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of Proponent coaches are responsible for managing additional instructors and more than half (51 percent) are responsible for hiring instructors.

The vast majority (85 percent) of our coaches create and manage their facility’s instruction programs. Nearly as many (79 percent) go the next step and create promotional materials for these programs.

Most of our members (71 percent) have their own branded website. That includes 64 percent of coaches who are employees and 77 percent who are independent contractors. Five years ago only 65 percent had their own website.

The percentage of coaches who are prominently featured on their facility’s website is a fairly modest 65 percent overall—indeed, this is down seven points from 72 percent five years ago. It always seems odd that a golf facility wouldn’t strongly encourage their site-visiting audience to look into instruction, given that improving golfers typically spend more time and money on the game.

Most members (85 percent) have an up-to-date database of their students, with that figure increasing to 100 percent for academy owner members. The numbers for promotional usage of that database aren’t quite as strong: Only 52 percent said they email their database at least once a month. That number jumps to 82 percent for academy owners. The good news is the overall percentage did increase a significant 13 points from 39 percent a year ago.
